A nakshatra is one of 27 equal 13°20′ lunar mansions along the sidereal ecliptic. Each houses a deity, a symbol and a ruling graha, and each pada (quarter) sharpens its expression. Together they give Vedic astrology its precision.
The Moon moves fastest of all the grahas and marks the point of the mind, memory and life force. The nakshatra it occupied at your birth is therefore called your Janma Nakṣatra — the signature that opens your birth chart.
Each nakshatra spans four padas, each tied to a different sign of the Navamsa division. Your pada refines which sade-sati and Dasha influences weave through your chart.
From Ashwini at 0° Aries to Revati at the end of Pisces, the 27 nakshatras follow the Moon’s reach through the sky. Ashwini, Bharani and Krittika open the Ram’s path; Rohini and Mrigashira follow under the Bull; and the sequence closes with Uttara Bhadrapada, Shatabhisha and Revati in the sign of the Fish. Each is ruled by one of the nine grahas — Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn — and together they describe the full cycle of the inner life.
Ketu rules Ashwini, Magha and Mula; Venus rules Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha; the Sun rules Krittika, Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha; the Moon rules Rohini, Hasta and Shravana; Mars rules Mrigashira, Chitra and Dhanishta; Rahu rules Ardra, Swati and Shatabhisha; Jupiter rules Punarvasu, Vishakha and Purva Bhadrapada; and Saturn rules Pushya, Anuradha and Uttara Bhadrapada.
